Blumhouse’s Black Christmas remake getting a PG-13 has received a lot of fan backlash, but an R-rating isn’t necessary for a horror movie to be good. To be fair, some of the criticism is understandable, to a point. Both 1974’s original Black Christmas movie and the sleazy but forgettable 2006 remake were rated R, and contained both bad language and graphic violence. Also, Black Christmas is a slasher film, and slashers are especially known for pushing the R-rating’s limits....
When we first started seeing renders based on the ‘notch’ design now expected for the iPhone 8, the cameras, sensors and speakers stood out as they were shown surrounded by visible screen. We yesterday saw a render based on a different approach: turning the status bar black so that it blends in with the notch, at least if the front of the phone is black. This provides a much neater look, though it could be argued that it detracts from the ultra-thin bezel appearance....
Pebble Time smartwatch users are getting a few notable updates today including a redesigned iOS app alongside the latest firmware for the watch itself that brings new features, fixes and enhancements. As for the Pebble Time app for iPhone, the app has a new layout and design with tabs along the bottom for managing Watchfaces, Apps, and Notifications, and a notification filtering feature that Pebble says lets users “control which apps are allowed to send notifications to your watch from the new Notifications tab....
We’ve heard reports before that Apple plans to include a periscope lens on future iPhones, and a new Ming-Chi Kuo report today suggests this is coming in 2022. But what exactly is a periscope lens, and what would it mean for future iPhones? For something which is being pitched by Huawei and Samsung as the latest in hi-tech smartphone camera technology, there’s actually nothing new about them … There have been suggestions that the first periscope lens used in a smartphone was way back in 2004....
Yesterday, Apple issued the third beta of iOS 7.1 to developers for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch. Like the original beta track for iOS 7.0, these iOS 7.1 betas have slowly been introducing some user-interface tweaks to the iOS Device experience. While not significant, changes to the Phone application, system sliders, some icons, and the keyboard slightly alter the way Apple’s products are used. Many of you sounded off in the comments about the changes, but we’ve compiled a poll (below) for you to vote if you like each new change over the iterations in the current release of iOS 7:
PayPal appears to be calling out Apple and its newly announced mobile payment service Apple Pay with an ad appearing in The New York Times print edition (via Pando Daily) indirectly reminding people of last month’s disastrous iCloud photo leak when a list of celebrities found their personal photos an intimate situations published on the web. The ad reads “We the people want our money safer than our selfies,” but PayPal isn’t without its own security issue in the past....

Felix “PewDiePie” Kjellberg announced that he’s taking a break from YouTube starting next year in a video decrying the site’s new anti-harassment policy. The new rules, which put harsher restrictions on harassment and implied threats of violence, have been criticized using the #YouTubeIsOver hashtag, particularly by video creators who have a history of calling out other YouTube users in their videos. It’s no surprise that PewDiePie takes a negative view of the new rules, given how often he’s been in the spotlight for creating controversial content....
