Netflix’s The Perfect Date trailer and poster star Noah Centineo as a high schooler who offers his services as stand-in date for his classmates. Netflix found a great deal of success in 2018 with its romantic comedies, ranging from teen-geared fare like The Kissing Booth and To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before to more adult (but still family-friendly) films like Set It Up. As a result, Netflix garnered partial credit in a major rom-com revival that was additionally boosted by the success of Warner Bros’ Crazy Rich Asians.
Since Netflix tends to take cues from what’s successful on the streaming service and expand upon it, it should come as no surprise that the company has a number of rom-coms in the works. These include sequels to The Kissing Booth and To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before in addition to new original romantic comedies. One such new upcoming rom-com is The Perfect Date, starring Netflix heartthrob Noah Centineo who previously appeared in the wildly successful To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and the less well-received rom-com Sierra Burgess Is a Loser. Now, Netflix has unveiled the first trailer and poster for The Perfect Date.
In The Perfect Date trailer and poster, Centineo stars as Brooks Rattigan, a high school student who wants to date a rich girl (played by Riverdale’s Camila Mendes) and attend Yale after graduation - but both those dreams require money. Then, Brooks finds himself chaperoning misfit Celia Lieberman (Laura Marano) to a school dance in exchange for money and it inspires a business idea. Brooks decides to charge for his services as a stand-in date in an effort to earn the money needed to get his dream girl and pay for his dream school. Of course, it’s not quite that simple, as is made abundantly clear by The Perfect Date trailer and poster, both of which can be viewed below.
Centineo saw his star rise exponentially in 2018 with the success of To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, and was speculated to be up for role of Bruce Wayne in Matt Reeves’ The Batman. While that may not be true, Centineo was cast as He-Man in the upcoming Masters of the Universe reboot from Sony. Further, he’ll appear in the Charlie’s Angels reboot that’s set to hit theaters this November. But first, fans who witnessed Centineo become the breakout star of To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before will get to see him in another Netflix rom-com thanks to The Perfect Date.
Like To All the Boys, in which Centineo had a great deal of chemistry with that film’s lead, Lana Condor, the actor’s charm in out in full force for the The Perfect Date trailer. Rather than play the romantic interest of the lead character, The Perfect Date sees Centineo take center stage as Brooks. While it’s entirely possible that Centineo’s acting talent and charisma will help him pull off his first rom-com leading role to success, that remains to be seen when The Perfect Date hits Netflix next month. Still, if The Perfect Date trailer is any indication, the rom-com will be another fantastic showcase of Centineo’s charm and skills before he makes the leap to action blockbusters.
