A new collection of international posters have been released for next month’s release, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. Pirates of the Caribbean has been sailing along as a franchise since 2003, when Johnny Depp first introduced audiences to his now-beloved Jack Sparrow character. Over the years, a lot of big-name stars have hit the high seas with Depp, including Keira Knightley, Orlando Bloom, Naomie Harris and Penelope Cruz. The four installments of the series have grossed a total of $3.7 billion worldwide, including a $1.045 billion haul for the last film, 2011’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
In summer 2017, a fifth Pirates film will be released and Depp is still out front as the swashbuckling, rum-swilling, Keith Richards-channeling pirate captain Jack Sparrow. For Dead Men Tell No Tales, Depp will be joined by a cast made up of old favorites from the franchise and new faces coming on-board to join the fun.
In a new series of international character posters (via IMP Awards), we get a look at several of the stars of Dead Men Tell No Tales, including Johnny Depp in full Jack Sparrow regalia. Villain Javier Bardem and young, attractive heroes Brenton Thwaites and Kaya Scodelario appear as well, along with Geoffrey Rush who is once again back as Barbossa.
It’s interesting to contrast the English-language versions of the posters with the international ones. The backgrounds in the English posters are much grayer and more somber, while the international ones are brighter and more fantastical, with huge blue waves behind the actors and sharks poking from the water (Jack Sparrow does encounter ghost sharks in the film, so this is not some randomly outlandish touch). There’s also a Spanish-language poster where the movie is titled Pirates of the Caribbean: The Revenge of Salazar, placing a greater emphasis on Javier Bardem’s role as an old nemesis of Jack Sparrow who has escaped The Devil’s Triangle and is out for vengeance.

One actor not featured in this batch of character posters is Orlando Bloom, who is returning for the fifth Pirates movie as a decidedly less-than-pretty Will Turner. It’s already been revealed that Brenton Thwaites is playing Will’s son Henry Turner, a character first introduced as a child in the post-credits scene for Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End. The Pirates series has now officially been around long enough for characters revealed as children to emerge as grown-ups.
The Pirates of the Caribbean movies have always been big money-makers for Disney, but there are couple of reasons for slight concern about the fifth film’s box office prospects. The biggest concern involves Johnny Depp’s star power, which has taken a hit since all the revelations about him during his divorce from Amber Heard. Another worry is that, after a six-year absence from the screen, the Pirates brand has lost some of its luster. Early reports indicate Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is a strong entry in the series, so perhaps any concerns about its box office potential will ultimately prove to be unfounded.
