The long speculated Babylon’s Fall from PlatinumGames has finally revealed its debut gameplay trailer. The game was announced back at E3 2018 and slated for a release in 2019. Obviously that hasn’t happened, as the game hadn’t even been shown to the public until today.
The famed developer PlatinumGames is widely known for their work on both adapted and original IPs. The company has worked with Nintendo on Star Fox Zero, and with Microsoft on the original third-person RPG Scalebound, although the latter was cancelled in 2017, with Microsoft ending production three years into development. Platinum has also made original titles with third party publishers, such as Bayonetta and Vanquish. In fact, a bundle of those two games is coming to PS4 and Xbox One in 2020.
The debut gameplay trailer for PlatinumGames next game Babylon’s Fall comes from Sony’s State of Play. The trailer shows off a similar gameplay style to that of other in-house titles like Bayonetta and Nier: Automata. Platinum-made games are well known for a third-person hack and slash type of combat. Babylon’s Fall seems to be no exception. As for graphics and setting, the trailer begins by showing off large-scale environments. There are sweeping vistas of the landscape, as well as high-rise buildings that seem long abandoned.
It’s indeterminable whether or not the game will have extensive RPG features just going on the trailer alone. The combat seems like the player will have access to a lot of moves, but whether or not that extends to skills, armor or weapon choice remains to be seen. By the looks of it, Babylon’s Fall seems to most closely resemble the Devil May Cry games. In fact, many of the combat moves from the Babylon’s Fall trailer seem directly inspired by those of Dante in Devil May Cry. It’s also worth noting that the trailer only shows off a single locale, so consumers haven’t seen everything that will be on offer from it.
PlatinumGames has a strong pedigree within the gaming industry, so it’s worth giving Babylon’s Fall a look, even if there isn’t much in the way of detail yet. Earlier this year, Babylon’s Fall was praised as one of the 15 unconfirmed games of 2019 that we most wanted to see. PlatinumGames’ most recent title, Astral Chain, was well-reviewed and called another PlatinumGames classic. In the last few years, Platinum has released some of the most revered games of the decade, so Babylon’s Fall has a lot of pressure on it to continue the studio’s recent streak of successes.
