Two games from the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series are being remade as a single title, as Game Freak has announced Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX will be released soon for the Nintendo Switch. Nintendo recently announced a new Pokémon Direct, which many fans assumed would contain announcements for Pokémon Sword & Shield content updates.

The Pokémon Direct did indeed focus on expansive paid DLC content for Pokémon Sword & Shield, but it opened with an announcement for a brand new game that combines elements from two previous Pokémon games. The mainline Pokémon games have consisted of duos of games that were compatible with each other, such as Pokémon Red & Blue, but these duos existed on the same system. The Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team games were unique, as Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team was released for the Nintendo Game Boy Advance, while Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team was released for the Nintendo DS.

The Pokémon Direct opened up with an announcement for Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX, which is a combined remake of both Blue Rescue Team and Red Rescue Team for the Nintendo Switch. The games feature gorgeous new visuals and the addition of Mega Evolutions, but the roster of Pokémon doesn’t seem to have been expanded too much. There don’t appear to be any Pokémon from the Galar region in the logo, nor was the ability to Dynamax or Gigantamax a Pokémon present in the trailer. The trailer can be seen on The Official Pokémon YouTube Channel.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX puts the player in the role of a human who is transformed into a Pokémon. They must team up with other Pokémon in order to complete missions, which involve exploring random dungeons filled with enemy Pokémon and items that can both help and harm the player. There were almost no differences between the two Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Rescue Team games, so combining them into one game won’t significantly add any content over the original titles. A demo of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX is available to download now on the eShop and progress can be imported into the full version of the game.

A lot of the fans who were speculating about the new announcements in the Pokémon Direct thought that remakes of Pokémon Diamond & Pearl were on the way, or that new Pokémon: Let’s Go! games set in the Johto region would be revealed. A new Pokémon Mystery Dungeon game seemed like a fairly safe bet, but it’s still awesome to see two of the best roguelike games from the Nintendo Game Boy Advance/DS era making a comeback on the Switch.
