A new series of Pokémon animated shorts will be running on YouTube in 2020, as The Pokémon Company International has announced Pokémon: Twilight Wings, which is a series that will be set entirely in the Galar region. The latest series of the Pokémon anime is set in every region, which means that the Galar region from Pokémon Sword & Shield will only be partially featured in the show.
The Pokémon anime has generally followed Ash Ketchum’s adventures in the region that is featured in the latest mainline games in the series. The fact that Ash won the Pokémon League after twenty-two years led many fans to believe that the anime would be going in a different direction, which has resulted in a new series that focuses on different regions, rather than just following Ash to the Galar region like many would have expected it to.
The Galar region will now be the focus of its own animated series next year, as The Pokémon Company International has announced that Pokémon: Twilight Wings will be released in 2020. The story of Pokémon: Twilight Wings will focus on different residents of the Galar region and the challenges they face in their everyday life, as well as including the new Pokémon that debuted in Pokémon Sword & Shield. The animation team behind Pokémon: Twilight Wings is Studio Colorido, which was previously responsible for 2018’s acclaimed adaptation of Penguin Highway. Pokémon: Twilight Wings will consist of seven episodes that will be approximately five minutes long, with the first episode being broadcast on January 15, 2020.
This isn’t the first time that a limited Pokémon anime series was created specifically for online platforms, as The Pokémon Company released Pokémon Generations on YouTube back in 2016. Pokémon Generations was a celebration of the history of the series and showed scenes that never appeared in the anime or games, such as Blue taking on the Elite Four and Silver being confronted about his father by Looker.
It’s unclear which characters from the Galar region will appear in Pokémon: Twilight Wings, as the only piece of artwork released of the series shows two young boys sitting on a bench. The fact that the Galar region isn’t the main focus of the latest season of the Pokémon anime left many fans feeling that the best moments in Pokémon Sword & Shield would not be represented in an animated form. The fact that Pokémon: Twilight Wings is set completely within the Galar region means that the Great Britain of the Pokémon world will have its own series in which to shine.
