The new Power Rangers movie is in full-on hype mode with less than three months to go before its March 24th release date. The trailer gave us a glimpse at what to expect from the reboot’s plot and character development, but so far, most of what’s known about the new Power Rangers is in the visual department. Since Rita Repulsa has been revealed to the world, fans have gotten a glimpse of the Rangers themselves.
There have been a few different glimpses at the new Rangers and their Zords. The newly designed Ranger uniforms have been seen in recent posters. But there hasn’t been quite as close a look at the Rangers’ suits as there is at the 2017 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.
Courtesy of IGN just gave viewers an up-close look at the Red Ranger’s suit, which is on full display at the annual tech trade show. From head to toe, the suit features a wide range of textures and an impressive level of detail. The exterior looks incredibly glossy and the suit as a whole looks quite heavy and cumbersome. It’s not the first time that the suit for the Red Ranger and the rest of the Power Rangers have been seen in their physical forms, but it is easily the most up-close, detailed look yet.
The Red Ranger, also known as Jason in the movie and other previous versions of the franchise, has always been the de facto leader of the team. The appearance of his full suit at CES seems to suggest that he continues to hold that role in the upcoming reboot, which doesn’t come as a surprise. Even the Red Ranger’s sword has been spotlighted in the promotion for the movie.
The fresh glimpse at the Red Ranger’s suit illustrates the painstaking attention to detail that went into its design. A complete reboot of the franchise gave the new movie’s designers the freedom to start anew and give Power Rangers fans something totally original, modernizing their look while also hearkening back to previous designs for the title characters.
There were obvious risks being taken with not just a full-on reboot of the Power Rangers franchise but the full update of the costumes that have become so recognizable in pop culture. There is certainly still some familiarity to the new suits, but there’s enough new detail to give it a fresh feel. The new Power Rangers movie will nonetheless need to feature a powerful story and strong performances to really be a success, but the visual aspects are certainly going to be among the most stunning of any installment in the franchise.
